Kyknet Kokkedoor Season 3
Kokkedoor is a South African cooking show that pairs competing chefs in teams – one being a trained, schooled chef; the other a self-taught home cook with a good understanding of traditional South African food. These pairs compete against other teams throughout the competition, which unfolds over 4 weeks. This in itself is quite challenging as you might imagine; egos can be a bit of a hindrance in a kitchen! The challenges are mostly traditional South African dishes with a new face or twist.
The road to Kokkedoor was unexpected. As with everything in the world, I believe there is always something new to learn.
Throughout my life, I have learned a lot about food through trial and error. Kokkedoor was definitely a learning curve for me and it also showed me that even though I am not classically trained, I do not have to stand back to anyone. I am always up for a challenge and always willing to learn new things.
I cook from my heart and almost always without recipes. My line of work does not leave much space for recipes and I always have to think on my feet, mostly with limited ingredients. The style of cooking they required in Kokkedoor was surprising at most. That would have to be a story for another day…
Being accepted in the top 20 ‘onthoukokke’ (remembrance cooks) was an honour to say the least. Food always played a big part in my life, even when I was a game ranger. I love cooking and I absolutely love what I do.
I have also learned that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, as the old saying goes, and that something that might be lekker (tasty) for one person, may not be all that lekker for someone else. In the end, you have to make sure that you’re cooking from the heart and that you’re having fun while doing so.
